About That Teacher Coach

Teaching a class shouldn’t feel like an improv lesson

But it’s such a common story, like mine back in 2013

Hi, I’m Amanda

I’m a globe-trotting swing dancer with over 10 years of experience teaching across 3 countries. Today I bring that expertise to my coaching gig. I’ve helped hundreds of teachers find their groove in the classroom – but let me tell you, my journey wasn’t all smooth sailing.

So, my teaching debut kicked off in England, it was like every class was a high speed car chase scene.

Picture this: in my first six months, I had a student set her hair ablaze and another one take a leap from a two-storey building.

Suddenly, I had transitioned from a noodle-eating uni student to a fully fledged teacher.

At just 21, barely out of my teenage years, I was giving advice to parents of and handling classrooms packed with 28 rowdy teen students. It was a wild ride – laughter one moment, then the next – me and my roommate rushing to grab that 3 for £10 wine deal at Marks & Spencer before hopping on the train home.

I went from being the laid-back uni student to feeling like a wide-eyed newbie on the first day of school.

With just the little direction from uni and looking at how my own teachers did it, I tried to figure out how to handle the classroom. But honestly, it felt as fake as the special effects in those old ’70s movies – totally not real and kinda out of date. I was lost, and the students probably were too!

Detentions, writing lines, and ‘death by worksheets’ felt as outdated as using an '80s phone in a 2020 flick.

I was all in for those workshops, chatting up colleagues and diving into research, hoping for that movie-like moment to solve everything. But the advice I got didn't really get me. It was all one-size-fits-all stuff that just didn't click or do the trick. I felt like I was wandering through educational strategies without a clue where to go...

. . . Until one day, I decided to take matters into my own hands, and do things my way.

I employed science-based strategies, infused with my personality and informed by my experiences, to shape my teaching approach.

Remarkably, the same students who once caused chaos (fire-lighting daredevils) were now enthusiastically conducting their own experiments, showcasing their newfound knowledge to the class.

I delivered my ‘lines’ with ease, feeling as though I had fully embraced a new ‘character’ that resonated with me perfectly. No longer the wide-eyed impostor teacher. Finally, I had truly become the confident lead in my classroom I’d always wanted to be!

Meet Amanda

When I’m not guiding teachers, you can find me jet-setting across the globe, dancing the night away to swing music, or snuggled up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and a fantastic film (my comfy socks on, of course!)

Having taught seven subjects across six schools in three different countries, I’ve learned one undeniable truth: outdated methods are no longer effective. As students, classrooms, and the skills required of teachers continue to evolve, it’s clear that a new approach is needed.

That’s where I come in. I’m here to help you develop your unique classroom persona, ensuring that you’re ready to take centre stage and run an effective classroom with confidence.
